Story: “Tiara” depicts a Kabuki actor portraying an Empress of the Japanese Edo Period (1615-1868). Kabuki theater was a highly-stylized dance drama with such exaggerated gestures that it was sometimes hard to distinguish between the gestures and the actual dancing. The all-male cast often wore the most dramatic, extravagant and expensive costumes. These extremely elaborate garments were embroidered with real silver and gold thread. Inspired by these Kabuki theater costumes, I gave “Tiara” a lavish Kimono heavily trimmed in gold and Citrine gemstones.
